Each of these projects reflects our commitment to making a positive difference and strengthening our bond with the community. We continue to look forward to new opportunities where our collective efforts can bring hope and transformation.
Project - Valvanda Adivasi School
We Rotarians of Rotary Club of Vartak Nagar Thane, Mahrashtra India, we have visited Adivasi High School, located in Village Valwanda, Taluka Jawhar, District Thane, Maharashtra, India, educates approximately 200 children. Most students walk several kilometers daily from nearby villages to attend school. The path to the school includes narrow, potholed roads that transition into a gravel track.
The school accommodates its students with limited infrastructure: one science lab, six classrooms, a community hall, and a small playground situated at the center of the facilities. The school is housed in a single-story building with an asbestos roof, which becomes unbearably hot during high temperatures. Additionally, most classrooms have only one fan, making studying difficult. Despite these challenges, the school has a remarkable record, with a 95% pass rate in SSC board exams over the years. In the previous academic year, a girl from the school achieved the top rank with 91% marks in the SSC exams.
Challenges:
-
The government provides salaries for teachers, but funding for essential materials, such as chalk, relies on donors.
-
The science lab equipment is broken, and students in grades 8 to 10 need guides and exam sets to compete effectively and score well.
-
The school struggles to cover its monthly electricity bill of approximately ₹1,500, depending entirely on donor support.
-
There is a lack of basic play equipment for children.
-
The plumbing in the children’s washrooms needs repair.
-
The community hall lacks carpeting, forcing children to sit on the bare floor.
How the Rotary Club of Vartak Nagar, Thane, Decided to Help:In the first phase, we will provide essential items that are urgently required, such as 21 sets of guides for SSC students and laboratory equipment. We will also strategize and plan to address other necessities in the coming days to ensure sustained support.
Project - Sustainable Planet
Rnisarg and the Green Pharmacy Foundation have launched a special initiative within the Thane Municipal Corporation limits to collect unused and expired medicines for safe disposal. Proper segregation of domestic hazardous waste is essential for scientific disposal to prevent soil and water pollution.
Mrs. Meenal Tipnis, a resident of Dosti Vihar and President of Mumbai Grahak Panchayat Thane Vibhag, has taken a keen interest in making the Green Pharmacy Bin accessible to Dosti Vihar residents. The Rotary Club of Vartak Nagar and Dosti Vihar Senior Citizens' Sanstha have supported this initiative by installing the bin near the Dosti Vihar Senior Citizens' office.
